Take Action: Join With 350.org To Take A Stand Against Offshore Drilling

Treehugger has been all over President Obama’s shocking announcement that he is willing to trade opening up more offshore drilling for support of a climate bill. Brian Merchant did a great run down earlier today that highlighted the breadth of Obama’s move–the East Coast, Gulf and Alaska will all be open for business for Big Oil. Many greens are feeling let down and confused, but take heart that some environmental gro…Read the full story on TreeHugger

Phelim McAleer: “That’s the Environmentalists’ Attitude: Ban DDT, Let the Black Children Die”

I’ve been sharing some of the videos I shot (shakily, with a Flip cam) from last night’s raucous debate between Power Trip author/Grist writer Amanda Little and Phelim McAleer, the climate skeptic behind the notorious Gore-bashing film Not Evil, Just Wrong. Sarah Silverman was moderating, and thinks got rowdy–so rowdy in fact, that McAleer resorted to arguing that if environmentalists continue to supp…Read the full story on TreeHugger

Wisconsin Bans Phophorus In Lawn Fertilizer To Protect Drinking Water And Tourism Industry

Lawn grass only needs phosphorus to establish a root structure – one growing season. An established lawn needs virtually no phosphorus in the nitrogen/phosphorus/potash blend. Recognizing the need to protect Wisconsin’s lakes and rivers, which support a large and economically important tourism industry, and which provide drinking water for a large portion of Wisconsin’s residents, the State no longer allows sale of phosphorus-containing l…Read the full story on TreeHugger

The Most Effective Tax Ever?
Washington DC’s 5 cent tax on plastic bags, instated just this past January, has already proven to have a phenomenal impact: the number of plastic bags handed out by supermarkets and other establishments dropped from the 2009 monthly average of 22.5 million to just 3 million in January. While significantly reducing plastic waste, the tax simultaneously generated $150,000 in revenue, which will be used to c…Read the full story on TreeHugger

Last night I attended what may be the strangest green-themed event ever. In order to roll out their new CT 200 hybrid with a bang, Lexus hosted an evening called the Darker Side of Green. The main attraction was a debate between author Amanda Little (Power Trip) and Gore-hating Phelim McAlee (the film Not Evil, Just Wrong) ‘moderated’ by Sarah Silverman (I say ‘moderated’ because as you’ll see in the videos below, she had no qual…Read the full story on TreeHugger

Looks Like a More Upscale Fusion Hybrid
Hyundai’s 2011 Sonata Hybrid wasn’t the only new hybrid car today. Ford’s Lincoln division also debuted the MKZ hybrid, the brand’s first hybrid car. Not surprisingly, it shares many things with the Ford Fusion hybrid, most notably the hybrid system and the SmartGauge instrument cluster that rewards you for driving in a fuel-effic…Read the full story on TreeHugger

Hyundai Unveils the 2011 Sonata Hybrid (Lithium-Polymer Batteries, 37/39 MPG)

Finally Some New Blood
Hyundai is challenging Toyota and Ford in the mid-size hybrid segment with the new Sonata hybrid which was unveiled today in New York. And at least on paper, it is quite competitive! It gets a slightly different styling from the regular 2011 Sonata (probably because of Toyota’s experience with the Prius — fewer people buy hybrids that look exactly the same as their non-hybrid counterparts), but the really interesting part is what’s under the hood. Read on for the technical specifications….Read the full story on TreeHugger
