Fireflies are Losing the Fight to Street Lights
Time-lapse photography shows the chaotic flight patterns of insects under a street lamp Photo via gizmodo
For most of human history, when the sun set and night descended it meant that it was time to sleep. But, as our earliest ancestors learned to create fire, they found they could extend their days beyond the confines of <a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/04/stop_daylight_…Read the full story on TreeHugger

I am only four days into the experiment and consider it way to early to evaluate (some say that it takes two weeks to adjust) but discovered a few other quick (and not so dirty) ways to try it out if you don’t happen to have an adjustable table around.
One interesting solution is the Anderlyn Desk, a flatpack design invented by Wi…Read the full story on TreeHugger

Most research has shown that deep sea fish sit at the top of their food chains—hunting as predators and scavenging the carcasses of dead animals. Recent tests, however, have demonstrated that these denizens of the deep preserve a more generalist diet and even eat plant matter as it sinks from the surface.
The discovery, researchers say, has serious implications for our understanding of <a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/12/glaciers-feed-th…Read the full story on TreeHugger

Get Ready for Lots of Acronyms
At the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit (ARPA-E means Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy), the U.S. secretary of energy Steven Chu announced $100 million in Recovery Act funds for clean tech research in fields related to energy. The three main areas that are getting funded are: 1) Grid-Scale Rampable Intermittent Dispatchable Storage (GRIDS — The DOE really loves acronyms), or ways to store energy on a very large scale, 2) Agile Delivery of Electrical Power Technology (ADEPT), or better ways to convert and switch power around, and 3) Building Energy E…Read the full story on TreeHugger

Stress-Free Green Commuting
We write a lot about how to reduce the impact of transportation and make our society less car-centric. Well, here’s a good example: Seattle’s relatively new Link light-rail. It currently has 13 stations that are all bike-accessible (with covered racks or lockers), and you can put at least 4 bikes in each train car. “Service is frequent, with headways as short as 7 minutes during rush hour, and never longer than 15 minutes. And like…Read the full story on TreeHugger
