The Nation Magazine Rips US eNGOs. Are They Right?

| Published March 6, 2010

The Nation.jpg

There’s a rift among some of the environmental groups almost as wide as the cracks in melting Arctic sea ice caused by climate change. Some groups, in the name of progress, are advocating compromises with some of the world’s worst polluters and for policies they know to be deeply flawed. Others stick to the science and their core values when campaigning to stop the worst effects of climate change. Or so goes the argument in an explosive new article in The Nation magazine that should be required reading for anyone concerned about the battle over what to do about clima…Read the full story on TreeHugger

Southern Company Says No Thanks To Alabama CCS Project

| Published March 1, 2010

Many are skeptical that Carbon Capture and Sequestration is a solution to climate change. The argument goes that coal can never be clean, and the costs and risks of storing carbon pollution deep underground makes CCS a false solution. The skeptics may now be joined by Southern Co., which is pulling out of an almost $700 million dollar CCS project in Alabama. …Read the full story on TreeHugger

Just What Exactly Are Lieberman, Kerry and Graham Cooking Up for the Climate?

Can John Kerry Help Create the Right Climate Bill?

Sens. Kerry, Lieberman, and Graham have been meeting behind closed doors for months, presumably writing a new climate and energy bill. Without much word coming from the three, environmentalists have been left to speculate on the bill’s contents. Conventional wisdom said that the bill is a tweak of the climate and energy bill that passed the House last year, but now word is coming out that …Read the full story on TreeHugger

NAACP: Van Jones Is An American Treasure

| Published February 23, 2010

vanjones.jpg

Van Jones, founder of Green For All and former special advisor for green jobs, enterprise and innovation at Council on Environmental Quality, was done wrong by a right-wing conspiracy and a slow-to-react White House. Glenn Beck, among others, tried to paint Jones as some sort of evil mastermind, conspiring to make the U.S. the new U.S.S.R. by championing green jobs. Now, after Jones was forced out of his job, the NAACP’s CEO and President Benjamin Todd Jealous is coming to his defense. …Read the full story on TreeHugger

John McCain: He Was For Climate Action Before He Was Against It

| Published February 17, 2010

Arizona Senator John McCain, who is facing a primary challenge from uber conservative J.D. Haynesworth, is no longer for a cap and trade system to reduce greenhouse emissions and move our economy to one that is powered by clean and green technologies instead of the dirty fuels of the past. He made this clear in a radio interview today in which McCain distanced himself, from, well, McCain. …Read the full story on TreeHugger

| Published February 10, 2010

Is Lindsey Graham Wavering on His Climate Change Commitment?

| Published January 27, 2010

There is one person in the “Party of No” who has been saying “Yes” on climate and energy legislation–Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. Graham has been working with Sens. States Step Up to Defend Endangerment Finding

Last year, the EPA issued a long awaited set of guidelines on regulating large, stationary sources of CO2. The rules, known as the “Endangerment Finding,” used the authority granted to the agency through a Supreme Court ruling that found CO2 to be a pollutant that the EPA could regulate. While environmentalists, especially those skeptical of Congress’ ability to regulate CO2, rejoiced, some industry groups protested, filing a lawsuit. Today, 16 states and New York City joined the lawsuit on behalf of the government….Read the full story on TreeHugger

The next few months, beginning with President Obama’s upcoming State of the Union speech, will be big ones for any effort to put a price on carbon in this country. Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid has signaled his willingness to have a floor vote on climate this spring, and Sens. Kerry, Leiberman, and Graham are said to be writing a bill that can get a filibuster proof 60 votes. But the active ingredient in this dynamic is presidential leadership, and today the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01…Read the full story on TreeHugger

A Dangerous Quid Pro Quo? EPA To Give UP CO2 Regulation for A Climate Bill?

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) will soon be allowed to offer an amendment to Senate debt legislation to strip the EPA of its ability, given to it under a Supreme Court decision and the Endangered Species Act, to regulate greenhouse gas emissions for one year. Murkowski, who sits on the powerful Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and is fervently against allowing EPA to cut greenhouse gas emissions, has been pushing the amendment for over a year….Read the full story on TreeHugger
